As a yin yoga teacher, one of the things that we strived for, is better mental health and physical wellbeing not only on our yoga mat but off the mat as well. One amazing tool that’s often overlooked and misunderstood is meditation. Meditation is not about changing you to another human being but really about enhancing who you are as a person and becoming a better version of yourself. Meditation is an assortment of techniques designed to allow you to gain an elevated state of awareness.

Meditation allows you to observe your thoughts and understand them as they are. Meditation can guide you through life and provide you with the necessary knowledge you needed to get past traumas or issues.  Meditation is a skill that allows you to become comfortable with your mind, a tough task indeed! We have so many thoughts going through our minds every second, that it can be hard to learn to sit with them and become comfortable. The one magical thing that happened to me when I started meditating and keeping consistent with the practice was that I was calmer, more focused, my mind wasn’t scattered all over the place and my sustained attention period was enhanced.

The feeling of relaxation you get from meditation will also reflect in every single aspect of your life. It will lower blood pressure, provide you with a calmer and more focused state of mind, improve your metabolism and heart rate. In this article, we will explore 10 benefits that you will get from daily meditation practice.

If you are struggling with meditation or don’t know where to start or looking at deepening your meditation practice in connection to your yoga lifestyle, I recommend that you guys check out the Muse Meditation System. Benefits of Meditation for Physical and Mental Well-Being

There are many physical and mental benefits to be received from daily meditation. Many multiple studies and my personal experience have shown that meditation can help you deal with many conditions like depression, stress, and anxiety. If you implement a daily meditation and keep practicing, it won’t take long before you notice and start to feel the tremendous amount of benefits through your physical well-being, mental well-being, and your soul.

Studies suggest that when your mind and body are relaxed, your body stops producing stress hormones. According to research conducted by the University of California, cortisol levels are on the lower side in people who practice meditation.

Another study by Harvard University indicates that meditation not only weakens the genes related to causing inflammation in the body, but it can also encourage the genes involved with the stability of DNA. Here are the benefits.

Meditation improves emotional health

Meditation makes us much better at handling our emotions and controlling them in a way that makes our lives more manageable. It makes you able to manage negative thoughts and prevent them from overpowering you.

According to research, it has been found that the gray matter of your brain (the region responsible for problem-solving and emotion management) happens to increase when you practice meditation regularly. Moreover, the amygdala ( a group of cells located at the bottom of the brain), the region that controls how we get afraid or get stressed, shrinks when you meditate daily.

Meditation reduces stress

Meditation reduces stress period and that’s one of the main reasons why people turn to meditation in the first place. When you meditate, you lower your cortisol level which is the hormone responsible for making you feel anxious and overwhelmed. By reducing this, you reduce your stress level and improve relaxation and sleep leading you to feel much better really quickly.

“Meditation, especially for people who don’t know very much about it and think it’s this very hippy dippy thing, can really be powerful, terrifying even, as it lifts the rug up on your subconscious and the dust comes flying out.” – Amanda Palmer

Meditation helps with age-induced memory loss

Meditation makes you more focused. It clears your mind clutter and allows you to be much more organized within your brain and your thoughts. This improves the clarity of your mind and your memory. So most people that suffer from age-induced memory loss, will notice a big increase in their memory retaining functions rather quickly. But like everything, you need to keep some consistency and be regular with the practice. Meditation is fitness for your mind and like anything else, requires regular effort.

Meditation increases self-awareness

One thing that I particularly enjoy about meditation, is it’s the ability to make you connect with your inner self and be fully aware of what is going on in your mind and in your life. By clearing up your thoughts through meditation, you leave space for guidance to manifest itself. Silence and quietness are some of the best teachers I ever had and I wouldn’t have known that if I would have never tried meditation. In a world plagued by constant stimulation and the need to be continuously entertained, it can be really hard at first to sit with your thoughts. But quickly you will learn what I learned for myself and appreciate meditation rather quickly.

Meditation can help control pain

Pain is an uncomfortable sensation that is directly connected to your central nervous system. And when subjected to stressful situations, your perception of pain is likely to be on the higher side. According to some studies, including meditation in your daily life can help you control this annoying sensation to a great extent. As per trusted sources, meditation can help reduce and control pain and improve the overall quality of life.

If you suffer from chronic pain and struggle to keep a sense of calmness and peace throughout your day, meditation can help you cope with this and be an extra tool in your toolbox.

Meditation improves sleep

Lack of sleep and insomnia has become one of the biggest issues in North America. With people averaging 5 hours of sleep nightly, it is no coincidence people are more agitated, lack patience, and can’t sustain focus for very long. Everyone has suffered or is currently suffering of insomnia at one point or another in their life. Studies have shown that mediation keeps your thoughts at bay and allows the mind and body to relax thus inducing sleep and keeping you asleep longer. So stay calm people and sleep!

Meditation can keep your blood pressure in control

If your blood pressure is constantly high, not only can it make your heart muscle weak, it can also lead to an increased chance of heart attack and stroke. According to various studies, it has been proven that meditation can actually help in lowering blood pressure. So, how does it work? Meditation helps in relaxing your nerves that work in coordination with your heart, thus protecting your heart from possible threats.

Meditation increases productivity

Have you ever wondered why every big entrepreneur and CEO practices meditation every morning and that’s part of their daily routine? It is because meditation is so strong at organizing your mind and keeping the clutter at bay, that it increases productivity by many folds. As we spoke about earlier, it also increases focus and clarity and these two are much needed for productivity.

Meditation increases creativity

Creativity is not limited to ideas. So, when you meditate, you are in a full state of awareness. You are most likely to create situations that will allow you to move effortlessly through life, from one scenario to the other, with a relaxed state of mind. When you are enjoying this mindfulness level, you get to access and get into the sense of direction and purpose with ease and poise. When you meditate, you can create anything. That is what creativity means. So, are you ready to create?

Meditation can help you get rid of addictions

Meditation helps you in developing mental discipline, awareness, and self-control. All of these can help you avoid dependencies on certain objects and substances. When you know that a certain substance is addictive, and you should stay away from it for your mental and physical well-being, you are most likely to avoid it. According to many studies, meditation can help you learn how to redirect your attention and control your impulsiveness. Besides addiction to substances, meditation can also help you control your food cravings. So, if you are on a weight loss regime, it can also help you greatly.
